Bergen is a city that takes jazz seriously. That makes the story of Torill Aurora Mønnich Paulsen even more striking.
In December 2017, a 12-year-old girl walked onto the Christmas jam stage at Swing N Sweet Jazzclub in Bergen. Within a few bars, the room changed. Musicians and regulars who had heard it all suddenly sat up straighter: the combination of presence, time feel and musical maturity coming from someone that young was, as more than one local put it, “bakoversveis‑materiale” — the kind of performance that blows you back in your chair.
Since that night, Torill Aurora has quietly, steadily built herself into one of the most promising young jazz voices in Norway. Based in Bergen, Hordaland, she has become a familiar name on the city’s club and festival stages, from Swing N Sweet Jazzclub / Lille Ole Bull Scene to intimate spots like Jazz:potet – Bergens Folkelige Jazzklubb, and venues in the orbit of houses like Madam Felle and Pavel’s Juke Joint.
With her Torill Aurora Band, featuring top-tier local musicians such as pianist Bjarne Øymyr, bassist Alexander Grieg and drummer Sigurd Steinkopf, she leads audiences through a repertoire that stretches from vocal jazz standards and Nina Simone‑coloured torch songs to more modern, Nordic‑flavoured material. A recent Jazz:potet announcement summed it up simply: “Torill Aurora er langt mer enn et talent” – Torill Aurora is far more than just a talent.
At only 20, she already sings like someone who knows that jazz is a long-distance run, not a sprint. In a city crowded with strong voices and deep history, Torill Aurora doesn’t shout to be heard. She opens her mouth, lets the melody breathe – and the room leans in.
