ABOUT HANNES BIRGIR HJÁLMARSSON
Hannes Birgir Hjálmarsson is one of the most active and dedicated figures in the Icelandic blues scene — a singer, guitarist, and songwriter who has been leading bands and organizing events in Reykjavík for nearly two decades.
Best known as the frontman and primary songwriter of Lame Dudes, a blues band he founded around 2007, Hjálmarsson has built a substantial body of original work that blends blues, blues-rock, and country, often featuring lyrics in Icelandic. The band's discography includes the studio albums "Hversdagsbláminn" and "Einfaldir vafningar" (2023, Alda Music), the English-language EP "Reykjavík Boogie," and the live album "Shades of 'Live' Blues" (2019) — featuring originals alongside covers of Robert Johnson, Johnny Cash, J.J. Cale, and Jimi Hendrix.
Beyond Lame Dudes, Hjálmarsson leads the Singletons, a blues outfit that performs regularly at Harpa Concert Hall, Café Rosenberg, and other Reykjavík venues in collaboration with the Reykjavík Blues Society. He has also organized the Jukejoint Festival, further cementing his role as both performer and promoter within Iceland's blues community.
His guitar style draws on the relaxed, groove-oriented approach of J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton, while his songwriting reveals a personal, often poetic voice — whether singing in Icelandic about everyday life or channeling classic blues themes in English.
