About Branko Bergstrand

Born on 2 September 2001 in Malmö, Sweden, Branko Bergstrand is one of the most exciting young voices to emerge from the Scandinavian blues scene in recent years. A harmonica player, singer and guitarist, he carries the spirit of the old blues masters with a natural ease that belies his age — and a stage presence that leaves audiences grinning from ear to ear.

Branko grew up in Malmö, a city with a quietly thriving blues community, and it didn’t take long before the music found him. Drawn to the raw, unfiltered power of Chicago blues and the deep, earthy grooves of the Mississippi Delta, he immersed himself in the tradition with the kind of dedication you rarely see in someone so young. His heroes — Howlin’ Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson II — are not just names on a playlist for Branko; they are the foundation on which he has built his own voice, his own tone, and his own way of commanding a room.

What sets Branko apart is the combination of technical maturity and pure joy. On harmonica, he plays with a full, breathing tone — expressive, dynamic, and deeply rooted in the blues tradition. On stage, his gestures are big, his energy is infectious, and his connection with the audience is immediate. The Malmö Blues Club described him as “a fully mature harmonica player with wonderful charisma — a mix of Joe Cocker and Muddy Waters” — high praise for any musician, let alone one still in his early twenties.

Branko made his first major public appearance in 2021 at the Malmö Blues Club’s Minifestival at Restaurant Wega, and it was clear from the start that this was not a debut — it was an arrival. Since then, he has become a regular fixture at Bluestältet, the iconic blues tent at the Malmö Festival, performing in 2022, 2023 and 2025 alongside some of the finest blues musicians in Scandinavia. At the Malmö Festival 2025, he was billed as “Malmö’s new harmonica star — despite his youth, deeply rooted in the old blues tradition, but also offering completely unexpected song interpretations.”

Central to Branko’s live work is his role as the frontman of Malmö Spelbolag, a collective of some of Malmö’s finest local musicians — including guitarist Jens Benner, guitarist Anders Wahlberg, bassist Benny Grinde and drummer Per Lindberg. Together they deliver a hard-swinging, authentic blues experience that has made them one of the most sought-after acts on the local circuit. Branko has also performed as a duo with Jens Benner at Medley Malmö, where the two explored the full breadth of the blues tradition — from Chicago shuffles to Delta slide and fingerpicking.

Beyond the stage, Branko has been building his recorded catalogue at Fabriken Studios in Malmö, releasing original blues-rock material including his single “Shake What You Got”, available on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and all major platforms. He has also appeared as a featured guest musician on recordings by other artists, further establishing himself as a versatile and in-demand collaborator in the wider Scandinavian music community.

Branko Bergstrand is, in every sense, the real thing — a young musician who has not just learned the blues, but lived it, breathed it, and made it his own. With a growing catalogue, a loyal following in Malmö and beyond, and a stage presence that draws people in from the first note, he is exactly the kind of emerging artist that the European blues scene needs right now.

The crossroads is calling. Branko is already there.

“A fully mature harmonica player with wonderful charisma, reminiscent of a blend between Joe Cocker and Muddy Waters.”
