ABOUT TRYGGVI JÚLÍUS HÜBNER

Tryggvi Júlíus Hübner (born January 11, 1957) is a distinguished Icelandic guitarist, educator, and session musician whose career spans over five decades and approximately 200 album credits. A master of classical, jazz, and blues guitar, Hübner is a foundational figure in Iceland's guitar culture. Hübner began his musical education at age six, studying violin at the Kópavogur Music School before switching to guitar at 12. After graduating from the Reykjavík Conservatory in 1983, he traveled to Spain to study classical guitar under Maestro José Tomás at the Conservatorio Oscar Esplá in Alicante (1984–1987), supplemented by masterclasses with David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, and Leo Brouwer. As a session musician, Hübner has appeared on roughly 200 recordings, collaborating with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and artists including Bubbi Morthens, Megas, Rúnar Júlíusson, and Björgvin Halldórsson. He has performed with numerous bands, including EIK, Cabaret, Stofnþel, and Áhöfnin á Halastjörnunni. In 1993, Hübner co-founded the Iceland Guitar School (Gítarskóli Íslands) with Torfi Ólafsson, where he serves as headmaster and head of the music theory department. His solo albums include "Betri ferð" (1995) and "2.0" (2010). In 2018, the Reykjavík Blues Society named him an honorary member — a recognition of his decades of contribution to the Icelandic blues scene.
