ABOUT FRIÐRIK KARLSSON
Friðrik Karlsson — known to friends and collaborators as "Frissi" — is one of the most internationally accomplished guitarists Iceland has ever produced. Born on April 24, 1960, he picked up a guitar in his early teens and turned professional at just sixteen. He became the first student to graduate in music from the FB college in Reykjavík, earning degrees in both classical and jazz/rock guitar — a dual grounding that would define the remarkable stylistic range of his career.
In 1977, Karlsson co-founded the jazz-funk fusion group Mezzoforte alongside keyboardist Eyjólfur Kristjánsson and a rotating cast of Iceland's finest players. The band's infectious instrumental sound caught the world's ear in 1983 when "Garden Party" stormed into the UK Top 10, making Mezzoforte one of the first Icelandic acts to achieve mainstream international chart success. Karlsson has remained a core member for over four decades, contributing guitar, compositions, and arrangements across the band's entire catalogue — from the self-titled 1979 debut through Surprise Surprise (1982), Observations (1983), Rising (1984), No Limits (1986), Playing for Time (1988), Daybreak (1994), Monkey Fields (1997), Forward Motion (2004), Live in Reykjavik (2007), Volcanic (2010), and Islands (2012).
In 1996, Karlsson relocated to London, where he spent eighteen years as one of the city's most in-demand session guitarists. His credits read like a who's who of global entertainment: he played on the film soundtracks for Evita (with Madonna) and Disney's Hercules, and performed in the pit and on stage for West End productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, and Saturday Night Fever. His recording session credits span artists as diverse as Madonna, Tom Jones, José Carreras, Ronan Keating, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, LeAnn Rimes, Cat Stevens, Il Divo, Jamiroquai, Westlife, Will Young, and Cliff Richard. He also served as the resident guitarist on The X Factor during Simon Cowell's tenure, placing his sound in front of millions of viewers every week.
The crowning moment of his session career came in 2014, when Kate Bush invited Karlsson to join her band for Before the Dawn — her first live concert series in thirty-five years. Over 22 sold-out performances at London's Hammersmith Apollo, Karlsson played guitar, bouzouki, and charango, sharing the stage with drummer Omar Hakim and guitarist David Rhodes while David Gilmour and Björk sat in the audience. Reflecting on the experience, Karlsson told Icelandic media: "This is the finest thing I have ever been involved in — and nothing went wrong." The show's production required roughly sixty people to bring to life, and Karlsson praised Kate Bush as the "total designer" who shaped every detail of the setlist, arrangements, and staging.
Beyond performance, Karlsson is a prolific solo recording artist. His debut album Point Blank (1990) showcased his jazz-fusion roots, but he soon developed a parallel career in ambient, new-age, and wellness music. Drawing on his studies of Ayurvedic science, Reiki, and ancient Hawaiian Huna, he created the "Feel Good Music Collection" and the "Ichillmusic" brand — instrumental albums designed for meditation, yoga, spas, and stress relief. His solo discography spans over thirty titles, including River of Life (1997), Into the Light (1998), Hugar-ró (1999), A New Day (2000), Good Morning (2001), Good Night (2001), Total Chillout (2001), Celtic Sunset (2001), Feng Shui (2002), Fullkomin kyrrð (2003), Snerting (2012), and Moods of Iceland (2016). In the streaming era, tracks like "Chillout Zone" and "Journey of Life" have accumulated millions of plays.
Karlsson also represented Iceland on the Eurovision stage — as a member of Heart2Heart in 1992, and as the composer of the 1993 Icelandic entry "Nighttime."
Now based between Iceland and England, Karlsson continues to perform with Mezzoforte, record solo material, and mentor the next generation of Icelandic musicians. His unique ability to move between jazz-funk, blues, classical, ambient, and pop — always with taste, precision, and feel — has earned him a singular place in the story of Icelandic music.
This is the finest thing I have ever been involved in — and nothing went wrong.
