“Bergen guitarist and event director building new platforms for live blues”
ABOUT DAVID PAVELS
David Pavels is a Bergen-based guitarist, event director, and cultural organiser whose tireless work behind and in front of the microphone is expanding the infrastructure for live blues, jazz, and roots music in western Norway.
As a performer, Pavels is a guitarist steeped in blues and jazz traditions, with a warm, expressive tone informed by his formal training in music production at Noroff and music pedagogy at Høyskolen Vestland. His playing bridges the groove-based directness of blues with the harmonic sophistication of jazz — a combination that serves him well across the multiple musical contexts he inhabits.
Pavels is the founder and driving force behind Pavels Juke Joint, a monthly mini-festival in Bergen that has been running since 2017. The Juke Joint concept — intimate, high-quality live music in a setting that echoes the juke joints of the American South — has become a beloved fixture of Bergen's cultural calendar, providing a regular platform for local and visiting blues and roots artists.
His event portfolio extends well beyond the Juke Joint. Pavels created Bergen Vista Social Club in 2015 and has launched several other ventures including Space Delta Sessions and the Soul Café Band project in 2024. In 2022, he organised DeltaJazzLand, an interdisciplinary event combining live music with other art forms. He is also active as a jazz promoter under the Jazzpotet banner, reflecting the breadth of his musical interests and organisational energy.
What sets Pavels apart in the Norwegian music landscape is his dual commitment to performing and building platforms. While many musicians focus solely on their own playing careers, Pavels invests equally in creating spaces and events where the wider community can perform, connect, and grow. His work in Bergen mirrors the community-building spirit that has made towns like Notodden into blues destinations — transplanted to Norway's second city and adapted to its distinct cultural environment.
With his guitar in one hand and an event programme in the other, David Pavels continues to be one of the most active forces for live music on Norway's west coast.
