Creative Audio Production & Sound Engineering (BA / HE Certificate)

The Creative Audio Production & Sound Engineering programme at Catalyst Berlin is built for producers and engineers who want to go far beyond “learning a DAW” and instead develop a distinctive sonic identity.

Set inside Berlin’s legendary Funkhaus complex, the course walks the line between technical training, creative practice and critical thinking. Over three years (or a one-year HE Certificate), you move from core studio skills to advanced production, mixing, mastering and self-directed projects that define who you are as a producer or engineer.

From First Mic Placement to Finished Records

From day one, you are working in industry-standard studios and production suites. You don’t just read about recording technique – you record bands, build mixes, master tracks and complete full audio projects from idea to release.

Across the programme you will:

• Make singles, EPs, studio albums and engineering projects
• Work on music for film and visual media
• Collaborate with students in film and acting for cross-disciplinary storytelling
• Learn to manage full workflows: from concept and pre-production to delivery and public release

By the end, you leave with a solid portfolio of real work and the confidence to bring both your own ideas and other people’s projects to life.

Year 1 – Building Your Foundation

In the first year (which can be taken as a standalone HE Certificate), you:

• Learn recording, mixing and production through hands-on studio projects
• Apply psychoacoustics and acoustics to shape your sound
• Work across multiple DAWs and hardware systems
• Start to build your professional identity as an artist, producer or engineer

It’s about mastering the fundamentals while already producing work that belongs in a portfolio.

Year 2 – Refining Your Sound

The second year deepens the skills from Year 1:

• Advanced recording, mixing and mastering on more complex projects
• Working confidently in larger studio environments with bands and collaborators
• Combining sequencing, synthesis and sampling across different media formats
• Exploring emerging technologies, including AI in production
• Clarifying your role and identity in today’s music industry

You’re not just “using the studio” — you’re learning to lead it.

Year 3 – Defining Your Vision

In the final year, you consolidate everything:

• Design and manage your own major project from concept to public release
• Lead production workflows, both independently and in collaboration
• Develop strategies for ideation, development and completion
• Position your work within the wider creative and industry landscape
